A UNIVERSE OF SONGS AND STORIES
Cotuit Library 871 Main Street - Cotuit, MA (508) 428-8141
The Cotuit Library will celebrate
April School Vacation and the coming 2019 Summer Reading Program
by presenting a performance for families by Parents’ Choice
Award winning performing Davis Bates. Entitled A Universe of
Songs and Stories, the program will involve the audience in a
variety of cultural traditions. Hear how stars came to be in the
sky, how foam came to be in the ocean, and be prepared to sing,
move and clap your hands. The program will include plenty of
sing-alongs, as well as a short lesson in how to play the
spoons, and an appearance by an Irish dancing wooden dog named
Bingo.
Pete Seeger called Davis "thoughtful, creative, human, and a
fantastic storyteller." Davis' traditional and participatory
performance style empowers and encourages audiences of all ages
to join in the fun, and to take the songs and stories home with
them to share with others. He also encourages listeners to
remember and tell stories from their own family and cultural
traditions.
Davis Bates has been telling stories for over forty years, in
schools, libraries, colleges and community settings around New
England and across the country. His recording of Family Stories
won a Parent’s Choice Gold Award, and was named one of the
year’s best Audio Recordings by Booklist Magazine. Davis has
also served as director and consultant for several local and
regional oral history and folk arts projects. Davis lives in the
village of Shelburne Falls, MA, and when he isn't collecting or
learning stories he spends his time gardening, cutting cordwood
and working various pollinator and wildlife preservation
projects.
This performance is funded, in part, by a grant from the
Mid-Cape Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the
Massachusetts Cultural Council.

SCI-FI BOOK CLUB
Cotuit Library 871 Main Street - Cotuit, MA (508) 428-8141
The Cotuit Library Sci-Fi Book Club
is meeting once again for some stellar book discussing. This
month we will be reading All Systems Red by Martha Wells, the
first novella in The Murderbot Diaries. Copies will be available
for checkout at the library and in ebook form on Libby leading
up to the event.
Check out this sinopsis of All Systems Red and then come to the
library and grab your copy:
“In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions
must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams
are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their
own safety.
“But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest
bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.
“On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting
surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid ― a
self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and
refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”
Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long
enough to figure out who it is.
“But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the
scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.”
